Medical costs abroad up to €500,000

Membership cover includes medical treatment abroad of €10,000. With Premium, the sum insured for one trip abroad rises to €500,000.

This increase is recommended for trips to countries with very expensive healthcare, for example:

• the Americas
• Turkey
• the Canary Islands
• Australia

Covered necessary medical treatment abroad includes:

• treatment that cannot be postponed,
• doctor-prescribed medication,
• necessary medical transport to the nearest suitable hospital.

For outpatient treatment abroad (including prescribed medicine) there is a €70 deductible per person. The add-on is for one trip, online only, and must be arranged before departure. Valid Alpenverein membership tied to residence in Europe is required.

Ascents above 6,000 m

Standard membership does not cover trips whose purpose is an ascent above 6,000 m.

With Premium you gain cover for rescue, medical treatment abroad and medically necessary repatriation. Ascents above 6,000 m must be led by an authorised guide. Mountaineering or expedition mountaineering is excluded.

For mountaineering, expedition mountaineering or self-organised tours without an authorised guide above 6,000 m, cover applies only with the insurer’s prior written consent. Assessment after submitting documents usually takes 2–3 weeks; apply before travel.

Further conditions for cover above 6,000 m (besides an approved application):

• membership paid for at least two consecutive years,
• main residence in Europe.

The entire trip must be insured (departure from residence until return). Online only, before departure; valid Alpenverein membership with at least two consecutive paid periods tied to residence in Europe is required.
